The London Brief is a series from Future Commerce covering commerce and culture
of the United Kingdom’s capitol city.

Legacy media has experienced a stark decline, especially compared to the incredible rise of individual content creators. Essentially every individual on the internet with a thought, opinion, or memorable aesthetic can be their own brand. And every piece of content, whether it be a post, video, or photo, is media.

In the new world of publishing, we are all media brands. And we are all publishers.

But there is a new class of media professionals who are rewriting the media playbook by bringing the best of “personal media entities” and “established media brands” together. They are creating distinct superformat ecosystems that showcase their distinct areas of expertise and points of view.

A superformat reflects how great brands (and great creative thinkers) can turn one original creation into multiple formats to create a continuum of creation.

As Ben Dietz, Founder of Rangelife and Publisher of [SIC] Weekly, noted: “It’s about trying to assess the stuff that’s in your portfolio…of your creative mind and [determining] the things that are applicable to as many instances as possible.”

Ben will guide a conversation during the VISIONS Summit in New York City with three executives who are helping shape the future of media and publishing:

Casey Lewis, Youth Trends Expert and Founder, After School

Casey Lewis is a youth trends expert who helps brands reach Gen Z and Gen Alpha consumers. In 2021, she founded After School, a consultancy and daily trends newsletter now read by 50,000 people. Prior to starting After School, she was an editor at Teen Vogue, MTV, and New York Magazine. Most recently, Casey helped American Eagle Outfitters launch its Substack, illustrating the new opportunities retail brands have to become their own publishing houses.

Daisy Alioto, Co-Founder, Dirt Media

Daisy Alioto is the co-founder of Dirt Media. Her journalism and nonfiction have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, The Paris Review Daily, The New Republic, and the Los Angeles Review of Books among others.

Erica Chen, Head of Strategy, Media Futures Group

Erica Chen is the Head of Strategy at Media Futures Group, Google's bespoke media agency. In her 20-plus years in the industry, she helped drive strategic innovation for brands like General Motors, Samsung, Coca-Cola, Hasbro, and The North Face. Erica is a passionate believer in the power of creativity and empathy.

The panel will discuss how they’re turning the art and science of media into a unique act of worldbuilding; one that is built on powerful platforms like Substack, reimagined through events, podcasts, and social media, and activated through highly engaged communities.

T-Minus 30 Days Until the VISIONS Summit

We’re officially less than a month away until 200 of the brightest minds in retail, media, tech, and philosophy converge at the Roy and Niuta Titus Theater in the MoMA.

Join us at an incredible cultural institution for a day of mic-drop-worthy conversations and presentations focused on the power of worldbuilding in a new cultural context. Executives from Walmart, Spatial, and U.N.N.A.M.E.D. will come together with renowned creators Andrew Huang and Dami Lee to explore how every brand, product, and experience contributes to a larger narrative that combines identity, culture, and technology. A narrative that shapes us individually and as a society.
